Kris reporting from Milan

I hope you had a nice weekend...we had a wonderful time...we have been very lucky with the weather these last two weeks...feels like summer... so we've been out in the sun...enjoying it while it lasts I guess...and to bring some more summer feel to your home... the next stop on our world tour is Italy... my favorite country in Europe... fell in love with Rome... but today is all about Milan...another beautiful city in Italy I still have to visit... and will make sure to visit in the future... especially after reading  about  this famous store Kris from Colorstripes is telling us about today...{ps. don't forget to pay a visit to Kris her blog, it's truly different and I love it} Spaziorossanaorlandi
"Spazio Rossana Orlandi
is a multifaceted and fascinating  gallery-shop situated in old converted tie factory,in Milan. It’s a home wares store, design gallery and fashion boutique, all in one. Owner Rossana has incredible capacity to pick such a variety of products and make them all fit together perfectly. Piet Hein Eek’s chairs, industrial lamp Jielde, Lisa Stickley’s tea towels, old terracotta chimneys,Kiki Van Eijk’s bottled carafe, airplane propellers and Anne Claire Petit’s crochet toys seam to be the part of the same fairy tale.
Spaziorossanaorlandi2
Serene and calm atmosphere of this place together with a kindness of  staff always remind me that design should be emotional, authentic and fun as well as functional. Stepping out into the real world could be cruel, so I suggest a break, just two steps behind the corner there is a small, cosy restaurant from the same owner called ’Pane & Acqua’(bread & water).
Spaziorossanaorlandi3
Designed by architect Paola Navone, it follows the spirit of Spazio, in fact all furniture and tableware are borrowed from the shop and it’s continually updated  so that you can actually by the coffee cup, dinner fork or even the clock!"

Lucy and Australian Caravana

Lucy from The Design Files...also wrote a very nice post for us about her favorite Australian designers...Caravana...

Caravanadesigners_2
{Caravana designers - Cathy Braid and Kirsten Ainsworth, photo from Vogue}
Caravana  is an inspiring Australian fashion label.  Young designers Cathy Braid and Kirsten Ainsworth started Caravana in 2003 with a unique shared vision.   They established their company not only with the aim of creating stunning garments inspired by age-old traditional techniques, but also as a means to empower culturally marginalised women in remote areas of central asia.
The pair recognised early on that they could not achieve their goals from a distance, so in 2003 they saved up some money, got on a plane to north-western Pakistan, and took up residence in a remote community in the Himalayan mountains....CLICK HERE TO READ MUCH MORE>>>

Lucy reporting from Melbourne

Lucy_melbcentreplace

The first week of Bloesem's World Tour is going to end in a part of the world where I have never been yet, Australia, but hopefully will visit very soon...and this guide from Lucy Feagins (from the Design Files) of Melbourne will definitly be part of our travelkit...I'm very glad Lucy has written such an extensive report of her great city...Melbourne...

"Melbourne’s Central Business District (CBD) has long been intertwined with narrow lanes and alleyways, largely used as service lanes for the larger buildings and businesses on the main streets.  For a long time, shops and businesses paid premium rent for frontage on these main streets, and the dusty back alleys were largely forgotten.

Lucy_melbournemix

In recent years, as rent has crept up higher and higher on the main thoroughfares, Melbourne’s laneways have undergone a renaissance. These days, the laneways are full to the brim of smaller, eclectic shops, cafes, and bars.  In fact, the most popular new bars and cafes increasingly position themselves hidden down cobbled streets barely wide enough for a bicycle (let alone a vehicle!), either up or down a dark flight of stairs, and often behind an unmarked door… it appears the more ‘hidden’ the establishment, the more in demand it will be! ...  CLICK HERE FOR MUCH MORE>>>

Paul Loebach

Paulloebach_milan
During the Milan Furniture Fair Paul Loebach was chosen to present his new furniture designs at the Salone Satellite 2008 ... and I completely understand why...his designs are very original and beautifully made. After his graduation from Rhode Island School of Design in 2002 Paul moved to New York city...descended from a long line of German woodworkers, his father is a manufacturing engineer who developed new plastic forming technologies for Union Carbide in the 1970’s. Paul sees his projects as an idealistic fusion of his family’s distant and more recent histories...you can click here to visit his website...
Paulloebach
I particularly like this table called, Vase Space inspired by American Federal furniture and the obsessive nature of neo-classicism, this side table integrates three removable vases that flow smoothly into the table top...here you can find his website and for more information please send Paul an email.

{ps. tomorrow Bloesem's World Tour will continue from Melbourne, Australia, hope to see you back}

A New Flower is Born...

Twiganaventura
ELizabeth informed me about a wonderful new print by Ana Ventura she is selling at Twig. The title is "A New Flower is Born". Perfect for Spring and Mother's Day! The print is actually a letterpress print and was hand pressed by MAV of Port2Port Press. Each print is hand signed and numbered by Ana and comes in a cute little printed glassine bag...of course I ordered one myself....

Joanna's favorite photographer

Joanna_flyingcarbymatt
After showing us a great spot to visit in New York Joanna from a Cup of Jo now would like to introduce us to a photographer duo she really admires...
"The Flying Car: I don't have a huge budget, but sometimes I pretend that I do and buy expensive art. My huge love is buying photographs from up-and-coming photographers. I rationalize the price by telling myself that I'm investing in art and supporting young talent, but really I'm just buying something I love!

The first real photograph I ever bought is still my favorite. It's by Matt Porter, a Brooklyn-based photographer. He took a photograph of a street in Maine, where he grew up. Then he photographed a small toy car hanging by a string in his studio. Then he merged the two photographs together, and voila! You get this amazing flying car photo. Whenever people come to my house, they always stare at it and talk about it and enjoy it. It's such a playful, lovely piece. Matt is a real talent--as is his girlfriend Hannah Whitaker--and I'm so happy to have one of his pieces in my home!"

Joanna_hannahwithacker

Joanna reporting from New York

Joanna_citytip2
In World Tour like this New York city is a must and I'm really happy Joanna from a Cup of Jo is doing us the honor of giving us some great insight information from New York city by showing us a favorite spot of hers...
"Hello, Kiosk...I live in New York, and I love heading over to Kiosk, a shop in Soho with a very cool concept. Every few months, the owners visit a different country (from Japan to Sweden to Mexico) and bring back tons of very cool, authentic pieces from that country. For example, at the moment, they're spotlighting Hong Kong, and they have a "fighting kite" and pinwheels to string up in your backyard, among many other things. Check out the shop here and be inspired with wanderlust!

Mrs.EliotBooks and Lucienne Day

Francesca_lucienday
For Bloesem's World Tour I asked several great bloggers to tell us a bit more about their favorite designer/artist from their neighborhood or country and Francesca (aka Birdie) choose to tell us a bit more about the extremely talented and influential Lucienne Day...
"I think I can trace my love of pattern to an exhibition I saw at the Barbican, seven or eight years ago featuring the work of Lucienne Day, the British designer known for her dynamic abstract textiles that brought modern design to 1950s kitchens.

I love the bold choices she made with her colours and designs in a time when people were so used to florals, and the design houses were underestimating the need for change, not wanting to take risks. But she kept her faith in modern art and you can really see evidence of Miro and Calder in her work. Here is a woman who stuck to her guns and constantly pushed the boundaries to move with the times.
Francesca_lucienday_3
When I was looking at some images of her work, I came across this pattern, ‘Magnetic’ which instantly reminded me of my ‘loop’ pattern that I use on my blog header. And although the inspiration for this pattern came from such a different place, I can’t help wondering if I’d seen it before.
Francesca_lucienday_2
Today you can buy Lucienne Day on tea towels and Converse and if you have a little windfall, the Centre For Advanced Textiles in Glasgow digitally reprints 20th century design classics."
{Thank you so much Francesca}

Francesca reporting from London

Francesca_big_cheshirestre
I'm really excited to start this Monday and Bloesem's World Tour in London...the very lovely Francesca Iannaccone aka Birdie from Mrs.EliotBooks was kind enough to send us some really  nice images and information about a  street/area in London you definitely must not miss when visiting London...Brick Lane...thank you Francesca for writing today's post:
"One of my favourite things about London is its history, especially in the little things like the street names that evoke times gone by – Cowcross Street, Petticoat Lane and Coldbath Square to name a few. One of my favourite places for weekend mooching is Brick Lane, an area that through the centuries has been home to Huguenot, Jewish and Bangladeshi communities. Now, like so many run down areas of London, the trendies have moved back in, while preserving its eclectic past. So among all the great shopping you will find a stretch of curry houses all vying for your custom; 19 Princelet Street - a tiny synagogue hiding inside an 18th Century Georgian townhouse, and arguably the best bagel bakery in London.

Just off Brick Lane is Cheshire Street, where you will find several special little shops:
Francesca_1_street
Unless you’re a 1940s housemaid or in the market for a £15 ball of twine, Labour and Wait may not be the place for you, but people swarm to this shop for its unique collection of utilitarian products for the home and garden and its timeless feel. Yes, even my cynical old man left the shop with two enamel camping mugs. They really know their market.
Francesca_labourandwait
{one of the shelves at Labour and Wait}
Comfort Station is a gorgeous boutique owned by my sister’s friend Amy Anderson. She uses text, plays on words and ironic messages to produce distinctive jewellery and accessories, and the shop’s interior is as stunning as its products, with vintage suitcases used as display shelves.
Francesca_2_street
Finally, Shelf is one of those chin-hits-the-floor shops, where if you’re not careful, you could spend a fortune on precious little things to fill your pockets. It has gorgeous stationery, cards, homewares, books, ceramics, all with a handmade, folky quality, including cushions in Stig Lindberg fabric and those amazing Liz Loveless screen printed books. Yes, this is the shop where I first encountered Atelier lzc. Enough said."

Hope you had a great weekend...I heard spring has arrived in New York and when I was living in there I always wore heads, because I think they make such a great accessories. Unfortunately back then I wasn't familiar with Terry Graziano her beautiful heads otherwise I would definitely had bought hers, she makes them with so much care and attention and the details are just perfect...
Terrygraziano
..."a modern approach to a traditional art form” is how Terry describes her signature line of soft, drape-able fabric hats. The fun thing about her hats is that you can wear them differently all the time and have a different look. You can order her hats online or send her an email if you have  a special request.

What to do...

Decor8
A little while ago Holly had a question for me...not an easy one...I must say..."what to do when you don't know what to do"... Nathalie from DesignUndercover commented on Decor8 a couple of weeks ago asking Holly the same sort of question, so Holly invited a couple of designers, artists and me to help answer the question...here are my answers...

Ladak

Ladak

Ladak...a new Dutch brand offering some great blankets which are made from recycled material...the base  is an old blanket (I don't know the English name for it, but normally they are being used for transporting fragile goods) ...some old sweaters, jeans, strong fabrics and ribbons are being used as details to give the blanket a new and surprisingly nice new look! Of course each blanket is unique and handmade and... has its own name; named for a homeless and or hero.
Ladak1
These blankets are perfect for an outdoor picnic or and early spring celebration on the terrace. The designers Jantien de Wilde and Jane Stroink are socially involved: 15% of the proceeds will go to a shelter for the homeless in Amsterdam. Their motto: when you are comfortable, they are comfortable! I love Ladak! Would you like to order one ..send the women from Ladak an email. (ps. google translate can help you with the Dutch language)

Yoo-ii

Ahyi
'My garden' is the title these beautiful prints, a new series from one of my favorite artists, ah_yi. These new limited edition is a collaboration, design by ah-yi • letterpress by lynn russell...i just ordered two other ones in her shop, so i have t wait a little while before I can get these and am really hoping they will still be there, but these beauties will definitely sell as hotcakes, print and quality are just amazing!

Wiener Papp

Wienerpap
Since I was a child I have a thing for journals, notebooks and agenda's and seeing such amazingly  detailed journals like these it just makes me very happy. Esther Diering from Berlin makes them and you can buy them in her shop Wiener Papp. Here you can read a little more about Esther, really funny! Another specialty of Esther is designing cd-cases, you can find some great ones right here.

Tree Top Studio

Treetop

Jennie from TreeTop Studio lives and works in Portland. She is an artist ever since she was old enough to hold a pencil and she says she has dabbled in many mediums but has the most fun with the Gocco press and designing prints! Since I started experimenting with my own gocco print I have a huge admiration for people who can create beautiful prints like these from TreeTop Studio, the fragile feel from the soft colors, the little details and using different colors is realy more difficult then you think. I love Jennie's prints and they are available in her Etsy shop, so very easy to treat yourself on one of her beauties!

Vintage homewares

Lorenzstudio
Today I did some vintage shopping on Etsy and look what i found...beautiful little shops seling great items, here are just a few I like...lovely vintage cocktail napkins in green and 3 vintage melmac bowls  also in green available at lorenzstudio.
Thriftygoodness
Vintage grey coffee cup and melamine art deco cream and sugar.

Vintage wooden blocks available at BlueBellBazaar.

More Milan previews

Vanity1
A new chair by my favorite designers from Sweden, Lisa Widén and Anna Irinarchos, who are WIS Design...their new Vanity Easy Chair comes in textile and is covered with a quilt of reused leather from old jackets and coats...nice idea don't you think!
Alaingillestables2
And the gorgeous Tectonic table series from Alain Gilles. the idea is based of movement within the construction of its shape but also the ability to create unexpected free form geometry by shifting and juxtaposing several small tables one next to the other.

Kiki van Eijk in Milan

Kikiworld_2

This week the most prestigious furniture fair of all is taking place...Salone Internazionale del Mobile Milan (16th to 21st april)...very exciting times and of course I wish I could just go there for one day and visit my favorite designers...one of them is absolutely Kiki van Eijk...I already thought she was the best designer in the Netherlands but now I'm absolutely sure...Kiki allowed me to show you some images as a preview from what she will be showing in Milan this week..an amazing collection inspired by stamps, buttons and  patchwork...Kiki's designs are so different and new and beautiful and warm and I could go one for hours...look at this Patchwork Cabinet in oak covered with some beautiful ceramic tiles,  all the elements are handmade, even the bronze hinges; a piece of real craftsmanship.
Stampedandsealed

...and how gorgeous are these 'Stamped and Sealed Jewels'...they derived from the beauty of medieval seals which were used on glass bottles. The green vase is inspired on medieval glass bottles with its handmade seals. The green comes from the colors that was used for glasswork in these times.

Domesticjewelsroomdivi_2
And this is not just a room divider...but a piece of art...Kiki used luxurious and layered jacquard fabric is on this cubistic frame which forms a room divider that will give homage to these precious kitchen tools. She calls it 'Domestic Jewels'. The style of this piece reminds of the 18th century Louis XVI furniture, but is very modern and cubistic at the same time. Thanks Kiki!

If you are in Milan please visit Kiki van Eijk at  zona Tortona, at via Voghera 11. Here she will be showing her reCollections together with another incredible Dutch designer Joost van Bleiswijk (more about him real soon) {All images by Frank Tielemans}

Last week was a bit rough in our house...my almost two year old son had the chicken pox, not only was he in pain, had a fever, he also looked so sad, his face covered with these horrible pox ... you probably can imagine this mom had a hard time seeing her son like this...but some beautiful comfort goodies arrived at my doorstep this week ... 2 beautiful packages from two very lovely ladies... all the way from Canada and Australia ... when opening Angela Liguori's box I was really overwhelmed by the beauty of her paper products, everything she makes is of such high quality, the details are just perfect, the Italian cotton ribbon so basic and pure and of course I will be using the ribbon with my initials for some knitting projects... and the Insectionary, miniature book is so gorgeous that I am going to have t framed. Thank you so much Angela!!

And one day later this beautiful handmade (yes handmade) clutch and purse arrived in the mail. My friend Jaime Beattie is such a sweetheart and I have to congratulate her for winning the award for Best Accessory Collection for her new SpringSummer 08-09 Collection at Debut 2008 Sydney! ...would you like to do some shopping for her collection, just click here.

Via Yatzer I found this very beautiful chair (obviously) called 'The Hanger Chair' and it is a design from Philippe Malouin. The great looking folding chair is perfect for smaller spaces...or for bigger spaces as well...invite as many people as you want...get some 'hangers' from your closet and the party can begin. Yatzer is having a nice little interview with Phillip who recently graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven.
